Events

The beautiful village of Montespertoli is characterized by a strong and rural tradition. The residents organize every year numerous festivals, gastronomic pavilions and folkloric spectacles.

The numerous events organized in Montespertoli are rooted in typical rural traditions and celebrate the products of the land such us the "vino novello" (new wine), the "vinsanto", the "olio nuovo" (new oil), the bread and the chestnuts.

Several food fairs and festivals are organized during the year. Not to be missed in winter the "Carnival Events" or the "Paneolio and White Truffle Festival".

During the springtime and summertime you can attend for numerous events such as the "Chianti Festival" - tasting and sale of Chianti D.O.C.G. - or the "Summer Concert".

No such event attracts so many people like MOSTRA del CHIANTI (Chianti Festival). Probably, its success lies in the fact that despite its high technical value, it is still a celebration of the people, surrounded by many side events such as: technical, cultural and folkloristic. Everyone can find something of their own interest, obviously besides the wine. For the young people lots of music, shows, songs, for sport lovers competitions and tournaments, for art lovers exhibitions and competitions, for stamp collectors and stamp obliterators and for those who love folklore; bands that play in the evenings and historical groups. The main attraction is the wine of course. Piazza Del Popolo continues to host the stands of the winemakers of the area and also the sale of souvenir wine glasses from the wine tasting exhibition.

MONTESPETOLI UNDER THE STARS
In the picturesque piazza Machiavelli from 8pm to 12am, will welcome all wine lovers, all united by their passion for Bacco, but also aware of being part of a major event that at same time enliven so many places, symbol of the Italian wines. Several winemaking companies of Montespertoli will be present in the square with their own stand dedicated to wine tasting. The wine lovers can also taste the typical local products such as pappa col pomodoro, the panzanella, the Florentine tripe and the bread soup. The shops will be open until midnight; there will also be "little Markets amongst the squares" with many handcraft products, where you can find flavours and exclusive items. It is a magical evening where you can enjoy the pleasure of being together and to discover our tastes and eating in the atmosphere of the farm’s feasts

10º MEETING OF "MAGGIOLONI"
The 2008 edition started at 9am from Martignana, in via Della Torraccia. The car parade began at 11am, and stopped at 12.30pm for an aperitif at the Castle Sonnino. At 4pm was the award ceremony and greetings to the participants. The proceeds were donated to charity for cancer research. The event is organized annually by the Memorial Tania Nencioni Association under the patronage of the Municipalities of Empoli and Montespertoli.

RIFICOLONA FESTIVAL
The Rificolone still takes place today, although it is not as it used to be. From classic shapes of the awkward montanine, changed to portray slices of watermelon, half moons, lanterns, which very often the kids used to make with colour paper in a frame of cane and wire. Now these handcrafts are no longer fashionable and the ready made Rificolone gadgets are imported from China as well as the most sophisticated such as: aircraft, missiles and typical cartoon characters, manufactured by industries. However, purchased or not, the multicoloured lanterns are still hanging everywhere on the windows of the buildings, of people’s homes, along the riverbanks and on the streets where the ancient song echoes “ona, ona, ona what a beautiful Rificolona” ..., where the ritual of Rificolone are burnt, not by throwing slices of watermelon peel, but by accurate shots with a refined blowpipe made of putty or clay. In the fifty’s this picturesque Florentine festival took place also on the River Arno, exactly upstream between Bellariva and pescaia of San Niccolò.

The parade of Rificolona took place along the River Arno: Huge allegories in paper on majestic boats with flowers and illuminated by hundreds of multicoloured paper lanterns that slowly moved on the water, together with small craft made boats and people would stand and applause from both sides the riverbank.

“OLIONOSTRO”
In 2008, at the Urban Park of Castle Sonnino everything went well. On Saturday, it was the inauguration with the opening of the stands. A great interest is to be paid to the initiative "Olionostro" (our oil), which consists in the sale of bottled olive oil, made from the olive harvest, by the children of the "Immaculate Conception" Comprehensive Institute and School of Children, deriving from the town’s lands of Montespertoli

The proceeds from the sale of the bottles with the label "Olionostro" was entirely devoted to the children of Saharawi, thanks to the cooperation of Auser and Golden Cross. Starting from 8pm, in the party restaurant, you can enjoy delicious Tuscan delicacies, including the home made specialties of the "exhibition of Pizzaiolo". On Sunday, the party began at 9:30am with the gathering of mountain bikes "amongst the vineyards, olive groves and oil mills"; the opening of the stands at 10am. At 12.30pm lunch at the restaurant with typical specialities and the olive oil "novo" which is the main attraction. In the afternoon appetizing snacks were served and at 8 pm the finale with an evening dinner. The "Paneolio 2008 exhibition" was also the occasion to introduce the "Bread of Montespertoli", made with ingredients grown and processed exclusively in the area, thanks to the union of bakers, millers and farmers of Montespertoli, from the project of a short chain "from wheat to bread." On Sunday was a day of attractions in the historic centre of Montespertoli, with a Market Fair and all the shops open.
