Forget crowded art cities and the noise of traffic. The true essence of Tuscany is discovered at a slow pace, walking along the white paths that cross the hills, breathing in the scent of wild thyme, and being enchanted by the geometries of the vineyards and olive groves.
Trekking in Chianti is not just physical activity; it is a sensory experience. If you are staying at Villa Le Torri in Montespertoli, you are in a privileged position. This area, known as the “Florentine Chianti,” offers a gentler and more authentic landscape, rich with ancient woods and fortified villages.
You don’t need to be an expert hiker. Here are 3 loop trails, perfect for a half-day walk, that either start from or develop just minutes away from our property.
This is the quintessential “vineyard” trail. It starts right from the heart of Montespertoli. The path initially winds through the orderly rows of Sangiovese, offering spectacular views over the Val di Pesa. You will reach the majestic Castello di Sonnino, one of our village’s historical icons, before returning through a small section of woods and olive groves.
Difficulty: Easy
Time: About 2 hours
Highlight: The view of the castle tower peaking through the vines.
An itinerary combining nature and history. Starting from the Poppiano area, this loop will lead you to skirt two of the most imposing castles in the region. You will walk along panoramic ridges separating the Val di Pesa from the Val d’Elsa, crossing vineyards and stretches of Mediterranean scrub. It is the perfect path for landscape photography lovers.
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: About 3 hours
Highlight: The two medieval castles and the 360-degree panorama.
This trail explores the wilder and older side of Montespertoli. You walk along the Via Lucardese, an ancient ridge road that connected the Val d’Elsa to Florence. You will cross oak and holm oak woods, discovering hidden small Romanesque churches and the remains of ancient medieval walls, before returning towards the village. It is the ideal trail for those seeking silence and freshness, especially in summer.
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Time: 2.5 hours
Highlight: Pieve di San Pietro in Mercato and the peace of the woods.
Right Shoes: Even though the trails are easy, the Tuscan hills are crumbly. A light trekking or trail running shoe is essential.
Water: There are no water fountains along the trails. Always carry a water bottle.
Maps: Ask us at reception! We will provide detailed maps and GPX files of the routes.
There is no better feeling than returning “home” after kilometers of walking. At Villa Le Torri, you can take off your boots and dip your feet into the coolness of our panoramic pool, or relax with a glass of Chianti Montespertoli DOCG in your private garden, admiring those very same hills you just explored.
Tuscany on foot is an emotion that lingers.
